Share This:

Recently, the master bathroom has gained a lot of ground, as far as the overall design. Gone are the days where a master bathroom – or any bathroom in your home for that matter – is simply a boring bathroom. Now, bathrooms are looked at as luxurious places in your home where you can go to relax and ward away your stresses of the day. Updating your bathroom to a more luxurious space could seem overwhelming and expensive. However, there are a few ways that you can make your master bath feel more like a resort or spa than a bathroom without emptying your bank account. Take a look at these five ways to update your master bathroom on a budget.

#1 Reinvent your vanity

The vanity is usually the first thing your or someone else sees when they walk into your bathroom. You have a few choices to affordably update your vanity to give it a more luxurious appearance and feeling. First, you can opt for a new one. When doing so, remember that a stock vanity is going to cost less than a custom vanity. However, to keep it from looking like a ‘stock’ vanity, you can update it yourself by painting it or staining it and topping it off with granite countertop. If a new one – stock or not – doesn’t fit in your budget, check thrift store and antique shops. You may be surprised at what you find, and with a little work and a granite countertop you will have a custom resort-like piece in your master bathroom.

#2 – Change the hardware

If you find that you really love your vanity, aside from updating to a granite countertop with undermount sinks, you might just want to update the hardware. Chance are, the vanity was put in several years ago, and the hardware is outdated. Simply upgrading to some new and more modern, can really create a sleek look. The same goes for your faucets and showerheads, as over the years, the finishes can get damaged, causing them to look drab instead of fab.

#3 – Repaint

One of the most inexpesive ways to update any room in your home is with paint. For less than $20 a gallon – on average – you can really make your bathroom feel fresh and relaxing. If you want to create a spa-like space, choose colors that remind you of the ocean, the sand, and the outdoors in general, such as sky blues, sea greens, and light tans. Remember to coordinate with your vanity color, your granite countertop choice, as well as the flooring, especially if this is an element that you are not planning to change.

#4 – Add an elegant mirror

A great way to really punch-up the aesthetics of a bathroom is with a unique mirror. Choose a framed mirror that takes up as much of the wall behind your sink as possible. This helps accomplish two things. First, it reflects all of the light – both natural and artifiical – in the room, which makes it feel brighter and more inviting. Second, it reflects the entire room, making feel much larger. Check out antique shops or thrift stores for old frames that fit your style, and have a new piece of mirror glass installed in the frame of your choice.

#5 – Change or add to your lighting plan

Light is a very important factor in any room of your home, but particularly your bathroom. Many bathroom lack a lot of natural light, and tend to lack enough artificial lighting to create a relaxing environment. You want to have both overhead lights and lights around/behind the mirror. It is recommended that you choose dimmer switches to give you varying amounts of light at different times. For instance, if you are heading in to soak in the tub, you want to be able to dim the lights, while on the other hand if you are getting ready for the day, you want to be able to turn the lights up so that you can see yourself in the mirror.

Aside from these five ways to instantly update your master bathroom, you might want to consider changing out your accents, such as the shower curtain, towels, sap dispenser, and curtains, ensuring that they coordinate with your new color palette. In addition, add a few natural elements, such as a plant to enhance the visual and emotional mood of your bathroom. Remember to clean the bathroom – deep clean to be specific – before you get started, as that can really make the space feel bright and refreshing. Also, add some scented potpourri, a reed diffuser, or some scented soaps to keep it feeling and smelling fresh ever day.

These are just a few of the ways that you can increase the appearece of your outdated master bathroom without spending every dime you’ve saved.
