Choosing the Right Sink for Your Granite Countertop

Share This:

If you have already chosen the granite for your kitchen remodel, the next step is to consider the sink. The sink and the slab should complement each other, which is why this decision isn’t one that should be taken lightly. There are two main decisions that you will have to make when choosing a sink to go with your new granite. The first is the type of sink, and the next is the sink material.

Undermount Sinks

The first type of sink is the undermount sink. These are the most common types of sink that is paired with granite. One of the reasons why is because you can simply wipe anything from the countertop, from crumbs to water, directly into the sink. Keep in mind that an undermount sink requires a professional installation.

Overmount Sinks

An overmount sink, which is essentially a drop-in sink, hangs onto the edge of the slab to hold itself in. These are usually less expensive than undermount sinks, but they also are not as convenient. Instead of simply sweeping the crumbs into the sink, they will get stuck around the lip of the sink.

Stainless Steel Sinks

When it comes to material, you can’t go wrong pairing stainless steel with granite. In fact, this is one of the most popular sink material choices. Stainless steel is available in both overmount and undermount designs, and it looks great with granite. Stainless steel is also great when it comes to chipping or cracking, but it can scratch and dent. So, it’s important that you choose a stainless steel sink that is higher quality with a higher gauge.

Granite Composite Sinks

Another great material option for a sink to match a granite countertop is a granite composite sink. These sinks are some of the toughest around. They are resistant to scratches, heat, and chips, and can resist temperatures of more than 500 degrees F. These sinks are also available in both undermount and overmount versions. Though granite composite sinks are made with granite, it is a man-made composite, which means that it won’t match your granite slab. However, that is why people often choose them. They are practical and attractive, perfect for busy families.

Quartz Sinks

Like granite composite, quartz composite sinks are made of ground quartz and a binding agent, which keeps them strong and sturdy. This material is resistant to cuts and scratches, and since they are man-made, you can get them in any color or design imaginable. Quartz composite isn’t as strong as granite composite, but it is still pretty tough, so you shouldn’t have any issues if you choose this for your new sink.

Porcelain Sinks

If you are focused more on looks than durability, you might want to choose a porcelain sink. You might be taken aback at first when you think about porcelain, because you might think that porcelain is very fragile. However, that’s not the case here. Instead, in this case, the core of the sink is usually made of a material like cast iron, and the exterior layer is porcelain. Like stainless steel, porcelain is prone to scratches, but you can fix those scratches with a refinishing. Porcelain can stain, too, so if you choose this material, you should be sure to always rinse it out when pouring anything colorful into the sink. When installed with granite, porcelain sinks are generally undermount. These are reasonably priced sinks, and in some cases, cheaper than the composite options. However, larger porcelain sinks can quickly rise in price.

These are only a few of the sink options you have when choosing granite countertops. Talk to your granite supplier for more ideas that will look great with the granite you choose.
