The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer – summer is here! This means that it is time to get outside and start having BBQ and parties. While you may have a large kitchen indoors with amazing granite countertops, top of the line appliances, and lots of space, an outdoor kitchen is a much more convenient option, preventing you from running in and out to prepare the food, and allowing you to spend more time with your guests who are all outdoors as well! There are five essential aspects of an outdoor kitchen that you will need to know about when planning the design.
Amenities
To start with, you will want to make sure that you have a cooking area, a food prep area, a dining area, and an area that serves as a place for socializing. We recommend adding in a bar with a stunning granite countertop, especially if you host parties with adult guests. In addition, so that you have the ability to prepare the food outside, you will want to make sure you have ample granite countertops for food prep and serving. We also recommend that you add in a kitchen sink that can run both hot and cold water. This will allow you to clean up your outdoor mess outside, without having to take everything indoors. For large parties, you may want to install a refrigerator/freezer that has an icemaker, as well as a beer tap for your bar.
Location
You will want to keep your outdoor kitchen as close to your house as possible, such as off your back patio or deck. You will want to consider this idea, as it will be easier to run power lines, gas lines, and water lines to your amenities if the kitchen is closer to your house. However, if you opt for one further from your home, you will want to make sure that it is fully stocked and equipped, so you are not running back and forth a long distance to carry supplies for the party.
Lighting
Even though an outdoor kitchen benefits from natural light, you will want to add lighting to the space. This is especially important if you will be hosting gatherings that go into the evening hours when the sun goes down. We recommend, however, that you opt for subtle lighting as opposed to bright lighting, and choose various types to be the most effective. For instance, hanging lights from the trees, arbor, or walls provides the space with soft lighting. In addition, you will want to add task lighting so you have the necessary lighting to prepare late night snacks for your guests.
Materials
Although it is important to pick quality materials for an indoor kitchen, it is more important to choose high quality materials for an outdoor kitchen. You want durable materials that will withstand the elements all year long – not just summer weather as you will not be bringing the kitchen indoors during the winter months. Granite countertops are an excellent option, as they are the most durable countertop material made. We also recommend heavy duty cabinetry that is made from plastic and coated in either wood or stainless steel to protect your items that you store there.
Climate Considerations
Although it is summer, you may not live in a warm climate, and should consider some alternative sources for heating. For instance, a portable heater is an excellent option for warming up your patio or deck. You can choose from electric or gas heaters. On the other hand, if you live in a very hot climate zone, you will want to install overhead fans to help bring a breeze to the space. Taking into consideration the climate you live in and preparing for what is necessary will help you keep your guests more comfortable – warm in the chilly climates, and cool during the hotter times.
Now that you know what you need to design your outdoor kitchen, you can get to work. Remember, once you have all the essentials in place, you will want to focus on the details. You may choose to match your outdoor kitchen to your gourmet indoor kitchen, or possibly create a whole new theme. No matter what you choose, it is important that you coordinate everything from the granite countertops to the cabinetry and appliances.
You want to make sure you guests are comfortable, so be sure to place adequately comfortable seating in your outdoor space as well. Finally, you will want to make sure that you outdoor kitchen looks stunning and is the place that all your friends and family not only want to come to, but talk about going to the entire summer! Take the time to design and build the most amazing outdoor kitchen, but remember the five essential aspects of the space.
