Choosing a Bathroom Vanity

Share This:

Are you adding an extra bathroom to your home or just tired of your current bathroom and looking to remodel? If so, one of the most important pieces to think about is the vanity. A vanity is defined as a combinations of a storage area with a countertop, sink(s), and mirrors. It is not only the centerpiece of the bathroom, but also one of the components of your bathroom that is highly customizable. It can be difficult to choose the right one, especially since there are so many options available! There are many things to take into consideration, such as the size of your bathroom and how large a vanity you want, the style of vanity to match the bathroom’s theme, amount of storage, number of sinks, and lighting are all important to get the right vanity for your specific needs.

Size

A small bathroom will require a small vanity, which means being efficient with use of space is an important need! One way to maximize bathroom space is to use a vanity meant for a corner or by angling a regular vanity in a corner. Another way to save space is to have a sink which sits on top of the vanity as opposed to being built in. This little reorganization allows for more storage space and the use of drawers. The vanity may even have shelves or towel rods incorporated into the sides for extra functionality that your bathroom might not already have. If no storage is available due to an open-type vanity that simply supports the sink, using stacked baskets beneath the vanity can add a little space.

If your bathroom can afford it, a large vanity is clearly a great area for customization, endless storage, and counter space. Instead of one large vanity, two smaller vanities can be a great option to break up a large bathroom. Matching his and hers sinks are common in any large bathroom, but individual sinks for “him” and “her” might add a unique touch for a personal master bathroom. Accessorizing a bathroom is also easier with more space. Plants, knick knacks, and other items can really bring together a themed bathroom if used correctly.

Style

There are many vanity styles to choose from. You may want to match the theme of your bathroom, but another option is to use a contrasting vanity style which can also be attractive.

A traditional vanity will never go out of style and is always a great option for a master or guest bathroom. These vanities often have hardwood cabinets and drawers with light, airy colors. Keeping with the European feel, traditional vanities will also have elegant sinks, faucets, and knobs. The mirrors are typically focal points in this style and may have beautiful metal or wood frames. Granite countertops are always a fantastic choice for this type of vanity, as they are beautiful and extremely sturdy.

Opposite of traditional, a modern vanity style is sleek and minimalist, featuring smooth curved or straight lines. These are great for smaller bathrooms or if you are simply looking for a stylish bathroom with a lot of flair. Modern vanities can have a large amount of storage if the sink is designed to sit on top of the counter, reducing space inside the vanity needed for the sink’s underside and plumbing. Other styles may be incorporated into the modern style by using the right colors and materials. For example, you would get a rustic feel from a modern bathroom using a wooden countertop and a black faucet.

Another popular vanity is the contemporary style. This design is similar to modern vanities in that they are sleek, minimal, and use clean lines. Typically using new materials of all one color or contrasting colors such as dark brown and white, the contemporary bathroom vanity may not be a good match for anyone looking to incorporate a lot of personality or bright color into their bathroom. However, that is not to say these vanities do not have personality! Glass or boxy porcelain sinks contrast beautifully with a darkly colored storage area and there are many different mirrors that fit in with this simple design.

Accents

Lighting and mirrors are two important accents that no vanity can live without. While some vanities come with mirrors attached, those that do not will need one to go with it. The type of mirror depends on the style of vanity and feel of the bathroom overall. As a focal point, the mirror is something to spend some time and thought with to decide on the perfect match. Contemporary bathrooms look fantastic with simple, rectangular mirrors while traditional and antique bathrooms will do better to have ornate mirrors with frames.

Choosing the lighting for your vanity is just as difficult! Lighting is commonly found above the mirrors of a vanity. This type of lighting can be ceiling or wall mounted with any number of lights. Since the vanity is often used for putting on makeup and other morning activities, lighting based above the mirrors often casts unattractive shadows on the face. The other option is to use sconces. Sconces can be mounted on the wall adjacent to the mirrors for lighting that is even with your height.
