Planning a Kitchen Remodel: A Step-By-Step Plan

Share This:

A large-scale kitchen remodel is not something that a homeowner should take on by themselves, and instead, it is best to work with a kitchen renovation expert. To experience a change in the kitchen, it is important to plan a full renovation instead of a making small changes. A full kitchen remodel will add a lot of value to your home, but to get the best outcome, take a step-by-step approach. With the right organization and planning, it is possible to not only transform your space, but also stick with your budget, and achieve the kitchen of your dreams.

Step #1 – Plan the Kitchen Layout

The first step in any kitchen remodel is to look at the big picture and plan the layout. A contractor is an invaluable source, in this case, as they will know the best way to set up the room. They will also have suggestions on where to place appliances if you want to move them, or what elements you may want to add, such as an island or peninsula. They also may suggest structural changes, such as knocking down a wall for more space.

Step #2 – Replace the Doors and Windows

Once the layout is done and approved, you should consider changing the doors and windows. Older homes, for example, often have window placement that is awkward for those of us living in the homes, today. The goal of replacing the windows, or even moving them is to enhance the look of the countertops, cabinetry and flooring. When it comes to the doors, if the door style will not fit in with the planned renovation, so it may be time to make a change. Eliminating the doors of a kitchen altogether may also be an option, as this room doesn’t necessarily need a door.

Step #3 – Choose New Cabinetry

The next step to take in a kitchen renovation is new cabinetry. Choosing new cabinetry is fairly easy, but there are certainly some things to keep in mind. For example, you will need to take into account the size of new appliances when installing cabinets. If you currently have a small refrigerator and plan on replacing it with a large one, you can’t simply use the dimensions of your current cabinets to buy your new ones. You also might find that the new cabinets you choose don’t come in the same dimensions as your old ones. Fortunately, in this case, a contractor will have solutions such as a filler, which can remedy this.

Step #4 – Replace the Sink and Countertops

The countertops are usually the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel, even if you choose a more affordable option, such as laminate. However, it is also important to realize that this material won’t give as much value to your home, and you will have to replace them at some point in the future, as they won’t last forever. Many people choose natural stone countertops in the kitchen, too, but this might not be affordable to all. An alternative is to consider granite tiles, which bring the benefits of granite at a lower price. After you have chosen your countertop, choose a sink that matches the countertop style and the decor of the room. There are likely more sinks on the market than you may think, so keep this in mind as you search and don’t choose the first one you see.

Step #5 – Focus on the Flooring

The last thing to focus on in a bathroom remodel is the flooring, and this is also where homeowners tend to make the most mistakes. One mistake that people often make is putting the new floor in before installing the rest of the elements. Modifications, such as new cabinetry, can cause gaps in the flooring, and these are very expensive and difficult to repair. Also, moving new appliances into the kitchen, installing new countertops or even painting can damage the floor. When it comes to choosing the flooring type, it is important that you are choosing a material and design that fits the needs of your family and matches your decor. You also might want to consider the longevity of the material when choosing the floor, as some materials are more durable than others.

Once you move through these steps, you will have a kitchen that is not only complete, but also beautiful. However, a full kitchen renovation can be overwhelming, expensive and take longer than you might think. Working with a qualified contractor, however, can ensure that your renovation goes as easily as possible. A contractor can also help you to stay on budget, and will know the best way to do things to complete the renovation on time.  Share your ideas, listen to their advice, and you can be sure that the contractor will do their best to create the kitchen of your dreams.
