When you begin searching for the perfect granite slab for your home, one of the first things you should keep in mind is that not all slabs are created equal. If you are selecting the slab for your countertop, there are some things you need to consider. Doing so will help ensure you get a quality piece of granite that will meet your needs and style preferences.

Granite slabs are the polished stone sheets that your granite countertops begin as. The question is, how do you select the right stone for your counters?

In addition to considering the type of stone, the surface finish, and color, you also need to know what

size your slab is and how many will be needed. Some tips that will help you choose the right stone can be found here.

What Type of Stone is Right for You?

If you have not done this yet, it is a good idea to get to know a bit about granite and the many benefits it offers. While there are numerous natural stone options to consider, you should keep in mind that granite is beautiful, durable, and extremely resistant to scratches, stains, and other issues that many other materials can be damaged by.

Marble and limestone don’t do well in kitchens; however, they are a better option for bathrooms. Knowing the basics is essential when it is time to pick out your granite slab.

When you ultimately pick a stone, it should be classified as “first quality.” Any lower grade options of granite are often ordered as first quality, but should only be used for commercial work. Be sure to inspect the slabs before choosing it as well, to make sure it is free from fissures, scratches, cracks, and other imperfections. If these issues are present, they may affect the countertop’s quality.

Selecting the Granite Stone Color

Modern granite slabs are offered in a broad range of patterns and colors. In most cases, selecting the right color of stone counters is a matter of personal style and taste. In some cases, the performance and characteristics of granite can vary based on the stone’s color.

When it is time to select a color for your granite countertops, be sure to keep the other colors of your kitchen in mind. If possible, bring samples so you can feel confident that the granite color you choose will complement and coordinate with the rest of the colors in your kitchen.

Surface Choices

While granite is typically installed with a polished surface, there are other surface finishes to consider. For example, honed granite is a stone that features a matte finish. This does not shine, and the color is different from the polished version. A flamed or river washed finish provides an incredibly textured surface that is extremely visually appealing. Take some time to view each of the surface options to find the one that is most appealing to you and that will work best in your space.

Size of the Slab

When you choose your stone, you will also need to know the number of slabs you are going to need and what thickness of stone you should purchase. On average, the typical granite slab is nine to 10 feet wide and five to six feet tall. When you visit a showroom, you will see that the slabs are displayed vertically.

It is important to note that even if a slab is 50 square feet, you may only be able to get 35 square feet of usable counters out of it due to granite remnants and waste. In most kitchens, multiple slabs are required, but they can be seamed to create a smooth surface. The actual size of the slabs created will affect the number of seams present in the kitchen and where they are located.

Taking some time to consider all the factors here will help you choose the granite slab that best suits the needs of your home. Keep in mind, there are countless color and pattern options to choose from, which means you will be able to easily find something that works for you. Don’t rush into a granite purchase decision without considering all the factors and features highlighted here.
